FAQs

Whilst Dramatherapy is relatively new to Australia, it's been established in Europe and the Americas since the late 1930s and was regulated as a trained form of Psychotherapy from the 1970s. Here's a few answers to common questions about Dramatherapy.

What does a dramatherapy session look like?

A skilled and experienced Dramatherapist will tailor each session to best support and empower their client. Together we will determine your therapeutic goals and needs and I will follow your lead. A dramatherapy session can include talking, play, story, object or body sculpts, sandtray, art, music or games.

What if I'm not good at drama?

No problem! Although the name can be misleading, you do not need to have any experience or talent with drama. Sessions are about using creative techniques to help tap into something when you might not have the words. The benefit is from the process of creating rather than the finished product. Whilst we may use drama- which could be story, play, art or movement-  you don't have to put on a performance and it remains a safe confidential space.

Is dramatherapy just for children?

No! Dramatherapy is a wonderful intervention for children as we can utilise imaginary play to communicate which can be a huge help for when a child might not have the emotional language to understand and express what they are feeling. However it is also a highly effective intervention for adolescents and adults. For anyone who has found traditional talking therapy to not be the right fit, who struggles to understand their emotions or who wants to find a new way to express themselves, dramatherapy can give you that space.

Can parents come into the room with their child for sessions?

Although it may be hard not to, it is really important that the therapy room remains your child's own space. We ask that you wait outside and allow your child to own this space. This helps your child understand that the dramatherapy space is different to a classroom. We will meet initially to discuss your child's needs and have regular reviews.
